THE END RESULT- VISTA OR XP
XP is expected to serve the people in the best way at least till 4 years of its life due to the new technology of the Avalon platform whereas the Vista does not provide much of the new technology with respect to the third party software because of which within the time span of 5 years, one would find it much better to skip Vista and jump on to the Vienna / Blackcomb / Windows 7.
There are some of us who are more interested in wanting the latest trend no matter of the old works better than it; it is just a status symbol. For them, they first, while purchasing should see what things have been changed from Vista to XP and then find the edition of Vista they would like to work with as Vista comes in 6 flavors.

THE ULTIMATE EDITION OF THE VISTA

THE PRICE FACTOR
If you buy Vista when you already have XP then you are not saving as you are paying a #380 more and also leaving what is worth $280. If you already have XP then you will have the software that would ad on to the functionality whereas if the extra software will cost you then you are on a safer side as you have invested in XP before hand.
Buying a new computer with Windows Vista is a better decision to take as the OEM versions of the OS are much cheaper.
