THE STORY BEHIND THE GAME
The D-Day mission in the single player campaign of the Call of Duty 2 contains four individual campaigns that are split into three stories with each story having a World War II soldier overcoming the odds in the war.
The first story:
EASTERN FRONT
The player plays the role of Private Vasili Ivanovich Koslov who is a Red Army soldier on the Russian front having the first Russian mission of that of a training mission during the Battle of Moscow. The player uses potatoes in place of grenades on the grenade range where after his training by beating the German assault, you are transferred to Stalingrad a year later to recapture a building, walk through trenches as tanks plow over them and hold a position recapturing another building at the end of the level under hails of gunfire, ultimately watching your commander ordering to destroy the building, killing the German soldiers barricaded inside. The player then takes part in house-to-house fighting across Stalingrad destructing several German tanks with sticky bombs. After this the player retakes holding a train yard and under heavy suppression, destroys the German tank recapturing other locations in the same map. Later, the player participates in, yet another house-to-house fighting in Stalingrad, destroying yet another tank in the process, reaching, recapturing and holding city hall, performing sniper combat.
THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN
Here, the player plays a British soldier named Sergeant John Davis of the 7th Armored Division having the first map where he has to sneak attack German troops, destructing a valuable German supply station. In the next map, the player has to defend a crucial town from overwhelming numbers of Germans, achieving victory by destroying the German tank force. With this, comes the Second Battle of El Alamein where the player fights through trenches, machine gun nests, flak 88s taking the German’s field HQ. The assault on El Daba to intercept the Germans in Africa destroying the flak 88s ends the first British campaign. In the second set of missions, the player takes the role of British Tank commander named David Welsh with a mission in Toujane, Tunisia where the player comes immediately under fire, holding a machine gun, wreaking havoc with an armored car, forced out by mines, and finally escaping the town with a handful of men. The next mission makes the player retake the town and the final map of capturing Matmata, shooting Stukas using a German anti-aircraft gun.
BATTLE OF NORMANDY
The player, here takes the role of a Corporal Bill Taylor of the 2nd Ranger Battalion starting by playing a part in D-Day, at the assault of Pointe du Hoc to destroy a German artillery battery holding it against a massive German counter offensive in the next mission. The player then captures a nearby town as a sniper against mortar crews until reinforcements come. The second US campaign takes place on Hill 400 with the capture of Bergstein that is a disastrous charge at Hill 400’s bunkers along the defense against the German counterattack, the player doing the sniper work against German mortar teams, destroying enemy armor, and holding the hill against the counter offensive burdened by artillery and overwhelming numbers of German soldiers. The final mission takes place for the control of Caen.
CROSSING THE RHINE
The final mission takes place in the Americans in the Rhine River crossing into Germany beginning as one of the few missions with the player immediately under fire, cover firing against Germans until reaching the river banks, fighting throughout the town with the final fight of the player defeating two German Tiger.
THE END
