THE ORIGINAL ATLANTIC CAR

The original Atlantic was built in 1953 on a regular model of Type 57 to give it taller proportions as compared to other Atlantics as it is the only Atlantic to have a body made entirely of magnesium where electron was the commercial name for magnesium. This car was even called the Aeroliths Electron Coupe which is because it may have been hit by a train.

Chassis #57374 is the second Atlantic in a series of three having a body of aluminum, built in 1936 using parts from the Aerolithe. The first owner of #57374 was Lord Victor Rothschild of London who asked the car in light blue with dark blue interior. The car was originally a Type 57S but Lord Victor sent the car back to Bugatti in 1939 to convert it into a supercharger. The second owner of the car was Bob Oliver of Los Angeles owning #57374, thereby modifying it in drastic ways like he resized the rear windows and painted the car several different colors including red. The

final owner, Peter D. Williamson of Lyme, New Hampshire, has restored the car to its 1936 specification. He debuted it at the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours winning it the best in show.

The final Atlantic was chassis #57591 whose owner was the owner of the large brand, Ralph Lauren since 1988. Ralph even included #57591 as a highlight in his collection which has Type 57SC Gangloff Cabriolet #57563.

Ralph commissioned Paul Russell to comprehensively restore #57591 using many original parts. During the restoration, Paul and his team discovered details of the original tan goatskin upholstery and seats filled with horsehair bags wrapped in muslin. It was showcased in the 2000 Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance where it won the best of show.
